What are the unique pieces of your life?
What are the things that breathe life into you and make you want to get up in the morning?
I am a life coach, yes, and I love it, but another major part of who I am is…songwriter. Writing songs is actually something I fought for a while. Thinking about it constantly, but at the same time trying to ignore those thoughts was absolutely driving me crazy. I wrestled with it and with the One who created me to do it until I was convinced I was indeed a songwriter. The part of me that compelled me to write would not be ignored. How did I then live with this knowledge?
I showed up to do the work. I blocked time for it and guarded that time.
Interestingly enough, I now lead a local group of songwriters. Like everyone and everything else we are about to launch a new year of songwriting goals and aspirations.
I have compiled a list of questions and asked them to consider the writer within. Helping them hone their skills is fine and good, but unless they know why they write, there really isn’t a point to crafting a better song.
I offer the same questions to you.
What is it that you were created to do? created to create? find compelling?
If you have buried it or tried to ignore it, it might take a while to remember what it was, but you know…deep inside, it is still there.
So, use these questions and whenever you see the word songwriting or writing, substitute your dream, your gifting or your goal.
Is songwriting important to me? Why?
On a scale of 1 to 10, how serious am I about songwriting?
How much time do I devote to songwriting (or things that feed my creativity) in a day? In a week?
What gets in the way of my writing?
Who or what are the voices in my head that discourage me from writing?
What do my own inner critics tell me about my songwriting?
Who is, or has been my greatest source of encouragement?
What in my life or schedule am I willing to change or give up in order to start paying more attention to my artist? My writing?
What could I do to enhance my writing skills?
What do I need to advance my songwriting? (Dream a little bit… an instrument, recording equipment, a special place to write, a retreat, etc.)
What word could you choose for the year that would help you achieve your songwriting goals?
Now, what are you going to do about it?
I would love to know what you discovered about yourself through these questions. I believe if you can answer these honestly, you are on your way to doing what you are created for and living Your One Beautiful Life. Leave a comment and let me know what you unveiled.
If you want some help digging through the mind chatter to find that part of yourself again or to set you off toward your dream or goal, that is where the life coach does her best work. Let’s hop on the phone for a free mini-session and get you started.
